India’s digital payments landscape is gearing up for another breakthrough. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), fintech platform Razorpay, and OpenAI have joined forces to test a new pilot that allows users to make UPI payments directly through ChatGPT.
This marks one of the first major implementations of agentic AI in Indian fintech, where artificial intelligence can carry out multi-step tasks with minimal human input — from product discovery and cart selection to payment initiation and confirmation.

ChatGPT Becomes a Shopping + Payment Assistant
Under this pilot, users can chat with ChatGPT, browse products, ask for recommendations, compare options, and even complete their UPI payments in the same conversation — without switching apps.
This is made possible through agentic AI, a more advanced form of AI capable of executing tasks end-to-end. Instead of being just an information tool, ChatGPT shifts into the role of a shopping guide and transaction helper.
According to early statements, the aim is to simplify e-commerce flows and make online buying more intuitive for users.
Your UPI Password and PIN Stay Safe
Despite ChatGPT handling discovery and checkout, the authentication process remains within the traditional UPI system.
That means:
- Your UPI PIN is not shared with ChatGPT
- ChatGPT cannot access or store your banking password
- All sensitive verification happens in your bank’s app or linked UPI ID
- Biometric or PIN-based approval still applies
Essentially, ChatGPT guides you, but you confirm the payment just like any regular UPI transaction.
This separation ensures the same level of safety that users already trust in the Indian UPI ecosystem.
Powered by UPI’s New ‘Reserve Pay’ Mechanism
The pilot is supported by a newly introduced UPI feature called Reserve Pay.
Reserve Pay allows users to “set aside” funds for a product or service before the final purchase is approved. ChatGPT can initiate this reserve step, but the actual confirmation is completed only when the user authorizes the payment in their bank’s UPI interface.
This extra layer ensures:
- No accidental payments
- No unauthorized transactions
- Full user control
- Stronger fraud protection in AI-assisted workflows

Pilot Partners: Banks + E-Commerce Platforms
Under the first testing phase:
- Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank are participating as banking partners
- BigBasket is among the first e-commerce platforms to support ChatGPT-powered UPI payments
As the pilot expands, more merchants and financial institutions are expected to join.
Why NPCI Is Exploring AI-Led Payments
NPCI views this experiment as a major step toward merging conversational AI with India’s real-time payments infrastructure.
The goal is to study:
- How users interact with AI for purchases
- Whether voice and text-based shopping flows improve convenience
- How agentic AI can automate repetitive steps in online payments
- Security behaviour in AI-assisted transactions
This pilot could influence future updates to UPI and other digital frameworks in India.
Fintech Competition Heats Up
Interestingly, the introduction of ChatGPT-led payments has already triggered movement across the fintech ecosystem. Competing platforms are rolling out their own versions of AI-driven agentic payments, signalling the beginning of a new phase in the digital payments race.
If successful, this could redefine how Indians buy online — turning conversations into fully functional payment flows.
A Big Leap for AI + Payments in India
If the pilot scales smoothly, ChatGPT might evolve from a conversational assistant into a trusted digital agent capable of handling safe, real-world financial tasks.
The promise is simple:
Faster shopping. Fewer steps. More natural interactions. Zero compromise on security.
And most importantly — your UPI password stays exactly where it should be: with you, not the AI.
