Smilo designed products that are kids friendly and healthy

After viewing a gap in the market for baby products that were practical but attractive Smilo decided to establish an e-commerce business.

While he was a sophomore in college, his pacifier layout was patented by Wiesman.  When brainstorming ways to increase his chances of getting into medical or dental school, he became interested in receiving a dental or medical apparatus patent.  During winter break, he moved to Dr. Tesini for a regular teeth cleaning.  Wiesman told his dentist that he hoped to get his own patent, also after spying a patent exhibited on the wall.  Dr. Tesini pulled out a folder for a pacifier that he stopped working on in 1985 and the two began a 20-year collaboration.

Additionally, there are many bottles already on the market which are designed to help babies with gasoline (popular brands include Dr. Brown and Avent).  Wiesman claims the look of Smilo’s nipples have been based on the milk ducts inside a breast, making it easier for infants to consume without sucking in too much air or placing too much pressure on their mouth, stomachs and ears, and in addition it has a port to let in air and keep from creating a vacuum.

Smilo currently creates two pacifiers, a silicone version known as the Smilo Newborn Pacifier along with the Smilo Pacifier, that comes in three sizes and is reversible to make it more easy for babies.

Founded by a team such as a biomedical engineer, dentist and industrial designer, Smilois a brand new direct-to-consumer brand that wants to make buying pacifiers and other essential baby products simpler for parents.   Its first lineup of products include pacifiers, bottles designed to decrease gas or ear infections and accessories such as pacifier clips and snack containers which don’t damage infant clothing.

For a baby item that is fundamental, picking the pacifier is daunting.  New parents don’t have any clue how many different pacifiers are on the market until they are still staring bleary-eyed at shop shelves.  Babies are famously picky about their soothers and often reject brands before finding their preferred, but it’s also very important to use pacifiers that will not hinder teeth growth.

Wiesman clarifies while babies are using them, which can make them develop a 21, that some pacifiers may collapse.  Smilo’s patented pacifier layouts avoid that by expanding marginally while in a kid’s mouth.  Smilo’s team looked for data about palate dimensions and pacifier layout and growth patterns for babies and toddlers up to 3 decades old in medical and dental journals.  Then Wiesman says that they hired a team to model a pacifier using finite element analysis to “understand how it stretched and prevailed in the mouth through soothing.”

TW Innovations, which makes devices that were pediatric were founded by the two.  Wiesman says that he feels that there isn’t a major difference between making baby supplies and making devices.  “The layout and problem-solving process is exactly the same.  I think the chance to make amazing, game-changing products in the infant and kid space is really what motivated me to create the change,” he states.
