Facebook Connectivity Initiatives: To be able to attract more people on the internet, Facebook has introduced new initiatives to update present networks to the long run, construct new programs in under-connected areas and leverage new technologies.
Facebook declared that Terragraph is going to likely be deployed for field trials in two places serving traffic.
“We are also announcing new companion trials for OpenCellular, a low-power base channel optimized for rural and densely populated areas of the planet,” Jay Parikh, head of engineering and infrastructure in Facebook, wrote in a blog article on Tuesday.
In addition, the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) – launched two years ago by Facebook and a number of industry partners to collaborate on new technologies to accelerate the pace of innovation in network infrastructure and to bring more people online – has grown to more than 500 companies and also is announcing new progress from project groups.
“Facebook stays dedicated to working closely together with the telecommunications ecosystem to help join the 3.8 billion individuals that aren’t yet online and enhance the experiences of these already linked,” Parikh said.
Facebook and Telefonica announced the conclusion of first deployments of high-speed cellular Internet to thousands of Peruvians throughout the highlands and in the Amazonian Rainforest.
“We’re announcing a joint trial with BT, Nokia and Cavium to show interoperability between the OpenCellular system and the Nokia community hosted system, allowing cloud-based remote auto-connection, monitoring and configuration of the Open Cellular base station,” Parikh noted.
